Hello
My name is Alicia Penner, I am a wife and mother of two young children in the Johnston Community District. I am running for the Johnston School Board. As a 10 year resident and current tree board member, I am excited to give back to our community. I currently serve on the Horizon PTO and as a homeroom parent.
Our Story
In 2024, our family faced a significant challenge when my son became ill.
His condition deeply impacted not only his health, but also his ability to learn, engage socially, and simply be a kid. Navigating this journey has opened my eyes to the struggles many families face when a child’s medical needs intersect with the educational system. We're forever grateful for his pediatrician and therapist, who stood by us when we felt alone and gave us a path forward.
Finding daily support—especially within the school environment—was difficult. We encountered gaps in understanding, communication, and available resources. This experience has motivated me to become a stronger advocate, not only for my own child, but for other families who are walking a similar path.
